How to Beat Depression - 1

How to Beat depression - 1

The first step in Beating Depression is,

Step 1 -
Recognise that you and Depression are not the same person , or identity , or status .

To simplify this,
we are going to call depression the nickname ' Dep ' during this Series .
 Not Johnny Dep the movie star , but just plain Dep .

The reason we are doing this is to help you realize
that you are not ' Depressed ' in terms of identity.
You may be feeling depressed ,
but that does not characterise who you are .

I hear this type of conversation all the time from the Depression Course enrolees ,
and the following conversation which we will have with our character Dep ,
represents the problem of identity confusion.

Dep - " I wasn't feeling well so I went to the Doctor ,
who diagnosed me as depressed , and gave me some medication ."
DB Course - " How do you feel about that Dep ? "
Dep - " Oh well , I guess I am depressed . I just say it as it is ."

The crucial mistake Dep is making here
 is his affirmation that his identity is depressed .
To declare " I am depressed " is not a matter of telling the truth,
but a self defeating affirmation .
We should instead say ,
" Normally I am a happy person ( identity ),
but lately I have been struggling with depression ,
I've been to the Doctor and I will beat depression ."

The major problem with identifying yourself with depression
is that it sends the wrong message to your sub-conscious mind .
As long as you keep telling yourself
that you are depressed,
then depression will have control over your emotions.

However ,
as soon as you see depression as something separate from your true nature ,
and opposite to the real you,
you have begun your journey to beat depression .

Your name is not Dep ,
so you should not call yourself  Ms. or Mr. Depression.
The next time someone asks you how you are ,
don't say , " I am depressed ",
but try , ' I have been battling depression lately , and I will beat it '.
This positive affirmation will lift your spirits immediately.

In this way you are separating the depression from  the Real You,
a loving , happy person .

Many people have occasional bouts with the black dog,
but you wouldn't say ," I am the black dog " , now would you ?

as you follow the 12 Steps in the Depression Beaters Program.
